The Motor Industry Association has welcomed the Government’s decision to reset the Clean Vehicle Standard, including temporary financial relief for importers and a full review of the scheme. The changes aim to reduce excessive compliance costs, avoid sharp vehicle price increases and better align policy with real market demand. MIA will work with Government on a simpler, more effective standard that still supports meaningful emissions reductions and customer choice.

In November 2023 the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) issued a consultation document on Proposed measures to reduce the environmental impact of fluorinated gases. Included in the document were proposed timelines to prohibit the import of equipment containing certain hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), including those contained in vehicle air-conditioning by January 2025 for new vehicles (and January 2028 for used). The MfE has since notified stakeholders that it has decided not to continue with these proposals.
